History
– in 1995 the Section of Art Education was created as a part of the Institute of Pedagogy (within the Faculty of Pedagogy). The curriculum within the unit covered  one of the art education specializations on the first-cycle  level.
– in 1997 the Section was transformed into the Institute of Art Education, and in 1998 a 5-year master’s degree art education course was launched.
– in 2007 a new specialization (graphics) was introduced and in December the Institute of Fine Arts separated from the Faculty of Pedagogy and Art. On 1st January 2008 it was transformed into the Faculty of Art.

The Faculty of Art (the former Institute of Fine Arts) has been headed by: prof. Stanisław Górecki, prof. Tadeusz Nuckowski, prof. Irena Popiołek-Rodzińska, prof. Jadwiga Szmyd-Sikora, and prof. Józef Jerzy Kierski.
Main areas of research

  • Art education in painting, drawing, sculpture and graphics
  • Examination of the model of a contemporary artist-educator
  • Theory of art education

The Faculty of Art academic staff systematically take part in national and international exhibitions, performances, competitions and artistic events. They also display their works in individual exhibitions.

Academic co-operation
Last year the Institute liased with the Józef Czapski Foundation in France, which will result in inviting various groups of students to France at the Foundation’s expense in the future.
German speaking students have the opportunity to do 3-month practical training in Germany within the Erasmus programme. The students’ stay is fully financed by the European Union and the University of Rzeszów.
The academic staff have been taking part in international exchanges with Collegium Johaneum (Germany), Saint Mary’s College (Orchard Lake, the USA) and Kent Institute of Art and Design (England).
Within the Erasmus programme “LifelongLearning”the Department co-operates with the West University of Timisoara (Romania) and the University of Presov (Slovakia).
Co-ordinator for international programmes: Jadwiga Sawicka, PhD

In 2002 the Institute of Fine Arts started co-operating with the State Vocational College in Sanok within the newly created art education specialization. After completing 3-year first-cycle studies the students can undertake the master’s degree studies in our department.
The academic staff of the department co-operate with the renowned literary-artistic magazine “Fraza”, in which their reviews, articles and commentaries on art are published on a regular basis.

Qualifications of the diploma holder
The Faculty of Art students can choose between two fields of study. Both art education and graphics allow them to gain an extensive knowledge on the history of art, the history of culture and civilization, aesthetics and philosophy. Each student has the opportunity to gain and develop their artistic and technical skills within the scope of painting, drawing, sculpture, workshop graphics, graphic design and related disciplines (e.g. multimedia). They are prepared to use effectively both traditional and modern artistic media. The Faculty of Art diploma holders are well prepared to do their own creative work or to work for cultural and art institutions, extra-school education, publishing houses and graphic design agencies (and after completing a teaching specialization course they can work in schools).
